COLOMBO, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan political leaders on Thursday congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s victory at the Indian General Elections.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, in a congratulatory message, said that the BJP party's victory was evident that India had entrusted Modi's party and its alliance partners the responsibility of guiding India's destiny for a further term.
"Having been associated with you, I would like to express the hope that in your second term at India's helm that bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and India will continue to grow, and strengthen, particularly on the economic front," Sirisena said.
He also emphasized that India has a key role to play in spearheading regional growth that brings prosperity to the region.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a congratulatory message, said that he looked forward to working closely with Modi and his government to take forward the ongoing initiatives in the multi faceted sectors of cooperation for the mutual benefit of the citizens of both India and Sri Lanka.
